Coffee and Colonialism - A Bitter Taste

This project is an exploration of my family's intricate ties to colonial coffee farms. As someone born on a coffee farm, where not only my father and uncles worked, but also my grandparents and some of their siblings, my connection to this research is profoundly personal. The narrative unfolds through an in-depth exploration of personal and public photographic archives, revealing the poignant intersection of individual histories and collective memories. This undertaking delves into the colonial history of coffee in Kenya, unraveling its complexities and shedding light on the enduring consequences of colonialism. The project seeks to offer a comprehensive understanding of the labor intricacies embedded in coffee production while appealing to our shared social responsibility.
